First Aid For Friends
First Aid for Friends
1. Be sure area is safe
2. Position someone above
3. See what happened to your friend (mechanism of injury)
4. Are they ○ Alert? ○ Verbal? ○ Are they acting “weird”? ○ Can they describe what happened?
5. Is anything life threatening? ○ Breathing ○ Pulse ○ Heavy bleeding ○ Temperature
6. Do you need to call for help? ○ Adult ○ 911 ○ When in doubt, call. ○ If no phone, send someone for help. One person always stays with injured friend. Call adult if: ● You need help, but things are ok Call 911 if: ● You are unsure. They will guide you. ● Heavy bleeding ● Friend unconscious or unresponsive ● Anything is life threatening (breathing, pulse, heavy bleeding, temperature) ● Time feels critical ● Things are getting worse ● Moving friend could cause more harm
7. Stay calm, keep friend calm, keep conversation going. Be nice.
8. Do what you can for injury ○ Apply firm pressure to bleeding ○ Keep warm ○ Use what you have ○ If suspect spinal injury: keep friend still, except to keep breathing or stop heavy bleeding
9. Decide how to get home ○ If help coming, stay warm and calm. Keep conversation. Be nice. ○ If going on your own, walk first. Go slowly, reassess.
